I enjoy cosplay (or anything that allows me to make believe) way too much. It's so much fun to dress up like the characters I admire (or wish I were, in some *cough* Lina *cough* cases).

Before I get into discussing past and future costumes, I have to thank my husband Tony for all the hard work he's done and will do on these costumes. Since I can't sew at all beyond putting a button on or fixing a small tear, he's the one that does the bulk of the work on these outfits. While I don't think he really understands the allure of dressing up and pretending, he's always been very supportive and extremely helpful when it came to this little compulsion of mine. He's very nice that way. ^_^

Now, enough with the credits, on with the costumes!!!

Lina Inverse from Slayers - worn at Otakon '01 & Katsucon '02.

Oh my god, how much of a pain in the ass was this costume??? -_- It didn't seem like it would be that hard, but all the tiny details were a huge pain. A huge pain that was completely, totally and utterly worth it. I think this came out really well, and I had such a good time cosplaying my utter hero that I cannot wait to wear this again. ^_^
It would take more room than I really have here to explain how the different pieces of this costume were made, so if you're interested in knowing the insane lengths Tony went to to get everything put together, I've posted an annoyingly verbose write up here. I'm planning on getting into this outfit and getting some better pictures taken soon, since I forgot to get one taken in the hotel room at Otakon before I ventured out. One of the pics you see below was taken from A Fan's View. Since it's me in the picture, I figured they wouldn't have too much of a problem with my appropriation of it. ^_^ Thanks to Shell the Web Ferret for finding it!!!

Sagara Sanosuke from Rurouni Kenshin - worn at Katsucon '01 & Otakon '01.

I worship Sano to no end. He's completely freaking awesome. I refused to let the fact that he's tall, skinny, and male stop my short, less than thin, female self from cosplaying him.
We made this one from a 100% cotton karate gi and kung fu shoes that we bought from the fabulous and fast-shipping WWMAS. Tony made the black border around the collar and sleeves and the stripes on the sides by sewing on black cotton/poly material cut to size. The kanji on the back was scanned from the manga and cleaned up by Kris, and it was printed out, ironed on, and retouched with fabric paint by Tony. The wig came from Hot Topic. It was originally blue, and no amount of black hairspray would get it dark enough, so I wound up spray painting it. ^_^ The red headband and the red left arm wrap were cut from lycra spandex, and the rest of the bandages and wrapping were yards and yards and yards of medical/athletic tape. I also wore a flesh colored T-shirt under the jacket to simulate the bared upper chest. Last but certainly not least, the stupidly hilarious fishbone was made by me out of white pipe cleaners. ^_^
I had waaaay too much fun wearing this costume, since it's pretty stinking funny, and comfortable to boot. I may have to be Sano at least one day at every con I go to from this day forth. ^_^

Nuriko from Fushigi Yuugi - worn to GenCon 2000

I admire Nuriko far more than is probably healthy. Gotta love the outspoken, ornery characters who kick a lot of butt and take very little crap. ^_^
To make this costume, which was based on one of Nuriko's traveling/adventuring outfits, I spent a whole lot of time dyeing a poor, defenseless 100% cotton kung fu uniform horrible colors. Said kung fu uniform, the red sash, and the kung fu shoes were purchased at WWMAS, whose prices are downright excellent for this type of thing. The white muslin part (surcoat??? I'm not sure about the term) and the silk collar trim were made by Tony, from a wing-chun uniform pattern that he modified. The wig was purchased at Trixie L'Amour on South Street in Philadelphia. It's not exactly the right shade, but it's still pretty darn purple. ^_^

Sailorsaturn from Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon - worn to GenCon 2000

Saturn is just way, way too cool for words. I have this crazy habit of being drawn to the little, short scrawny characters who can blow up the world. ^_^
Tony slaved over this costume. I personally think he did an awesome job with it. He made the fuku based on a pattern for a skating dress, from white elasticized stretch cotton and purple satin. The bows were made by me from maroon satin of the same type as the skirt and collar. The brooch was a Christmas decoration, and the tiara was made with gold lame ribbon with a piece of elastic inside and a costume jewel glued on the front. The wig, once again, came from Trixie L'Amour.
The boots were a big challenge. They started out as an ordinary pair of square pumps which I painted purple with fabric paint. The uppers were designed by Tony, who cut them from the same satin as the collar and skirt and sewed them into "socks" which could be pulled over my legs, laced up the front, and fitted inside the shoes for the look of a complete boot. The lace-up gromments were pounded by hand, by me. I've never done anything so boring in my life. *_* The laces themsleves were just purple wool yarn we got at the craft store.
The last but certainly not least part of the costume was the amazingly hysterical plushie Silence Glaive. I didn't make this; I bought it from Susan de Venici's Anime Costumes. Tony was very insulted by it. He felt he could have made a better Glaive for me, but we were getting time crunched. I found this one online, and went for it. ^_^ It's still proudly on display in my living room. Few things on this earth as quite as entertaining as my plushie Glaive, regardless of whether Shell thinks it needs Viagra or not.

Ashitaka from Princess Mononoke, to be worn at Katsu '03.

I've said in the past that at some point I'd like to cosplay San. However, the more time goes on, the more I'd rather be Ashitaka, especially after I've heard Tony's theory on how I could be accompanied by my own Yakul. *L*

Radical Edward from Cowboy Bebop, to be worn at Otakon '03

Oh, I am hell bent on doing this. I must be Ed. I MUST!

I'm planning on cosplaying Ed in her pink dress from the "Brain Scratch" episode. This is less because I was so enamored with that episode than it is because I saw tons of "regular" Eds at Otakon this year, and I'd like to do something a little different. Plus, I'm planning on beating Tony into submission by getting him to cosplay my "daddy" Jet. I would find this more hilarious than words could possibly convey. We'll see next summer if I can actually get him to do this. ^_^

Mano Ayako from Devil Hunter Yohko, to be worn sometime down the road

How cool is Ayako??? Cool enough for me to want to cosplay her!!! She's a scheming little hellcow, she's a woman on a mission, and her insanely competitive nature makes her a psychologically rational choice for me to cosplay. ^_^

This costume was originally planned to coincide with Shell's Yohko costume that she wore to Otakon '01, but time and cash restraints rendered me unable to do it then.

Canal Volfield from Lost Universe, to be worn sometime down the road

How friggin' hilarious is Canal??? How much do I think she rules? How freaking hysterical would it be to cosplay her in her chicken suit outfit? How easy would it be to buy a green pageboy wig and some stickers for my forehead and then go rent a chicken suit? Oh yeah, this needs to be done.

Nicholas D. Wolfwood from Trigun, to be worn sometime down the road

I love Wolfwood in all his resplendent badassery. He's such a bastard, how could I not? Tony's actually all for this one, since he seems to feel up to the onerous task of rigging up a fully operational cross. I've learned better than to challenge him on whether or not he could actually do it. ^_^

Gally from Battle Angel, to be worn sometime down the road

I think Gally is amazingly cool. As I've said, I have a huge thing for little tiny characters with huge amounts of power. ^_^ This one wouldn't be horribly hard to make, but it would require a major fitness regimen on my part before I could even attempt to pull it off. We'll see.
